In this article, I am going to explain to you why pregnant women should avoid certain acne treatments. Then later on, I will be introducing a product that has been developed to eliminate acne successfully whether you are pregnant or not.

There are times when we have to "step on the break" and ask, is this a smart move? How will this affect my present stage? Is it going to affect the baby that is yet to be born? There are numerous questions to be asked. As the saying goes, “When in doubt, ask questions" which is why I am writing this post. The aim is to answer the question whether pregnant women should treat acne or not.

Pregnancy is an extremely delicate stage in the life of a woman. She has to stick to certain rules and stay away from many things like staying away from alcohol, tobacco, drugs you name it, paying attention to what she eats and drinks, sleeping regime etc.

The rationale for all these precautions is not to by all means endanger the health and well being of the woman as well as her yet to be born baby. Therefore a woman has to be extra careful to maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.

This post, while it is a good source of information for pregnant women is also beneficial to those who intend get pregnant some day. We have here a list of certain medications and procedures for acne treatment which we believe should be avoided by pregnant women. The reason is that they have the potentials to cause harm to the fetus.

Hormonal Therapy For Treating Acne

Acne Vulgaris is the most common form of acne that is usually treated by hormonal therapy. Acne vulgaris occurs due to a disorder in the pilosebaceous unit. Hormonal therapy for acne can be administered when flares occur during menstrual cycles. The therapy may include the administration of flutamide, spirolactone and estrogen. Now these agents, chemicals, substances or whatever you like to call them are harmful. They can cause problems for the fetus as well as for the mother. This is a health threat and therefore should be avoided.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is a prescription medication which is used to combat severe forms of acne. By the way, I as the author of this article am not a fan of prescription medication. I prefer natural means of treatments. That is for another article or post somewhere else.

Let us go back to isotretinoin. This method of acne treatment is applied only after all other methods have not yielded any results. Also bear in mind that a course of treatment might require say 4 to 5 months. Every responsible dermatologist should warn their female patients about isotretinoin. This substance can cause severe health problems for the mother and the child in her womb.

That is why strict monitoring by an expert is advised if the woman must for some reason use it. In one of their publications, the American Academy of Dermatologists specifically warned women to avoid getting pregnant if they are on isotretinoin treatment of acne.

Oral Tetracyclines

These medications can be in the form of minocycline, tetracycline and doxycycline. They are not only bad for pregnant women alone but breast feeding mothers as well should stay away from them. Yes, threat to the life of both the mother and child exist.

Tetracyclines are primarily used as anti bacterial medications. Tetracyclines are not recommended for acne treatment to pregnant women due to a host of unwanted side effects. The most notable effects are the permanent discoloration of the teeth and problems with bone disorders.

Topical Retinoids

This group includes tretinoin, adaplene and tazarotene. They can be found in forms of lotion, gels and creams. These also should be avoided at all cost by pregnant or nursing women.

With all being said, if you are pregnant and have acne, the advice is to be patient until you deliver your baby and when you are done with breastfeeding. The last thing you want to do is risk your life and the life of baby. If you are not pregnant the best you can do in fighting your acne is to take a safer approach.
